Reusable Bags versus Paper Bags

October 27, 2016

There is a battle raging to save the environment, and the positive effects of this can be seen at your local grocery store from the bags that are being used by customers. The use of paper bags for shopping is slowly fading out as plastic bags take their place, however, these too are one time use bags that are now frowned upon because of their contribution to the global pollution problems.

As paper bags are still preferred by some shoppers, alternative reusable bags are quickly taking their place. But, people question if reusable bags are any better than paper bags, or even plastic bags? There are a few types or kinds of reusable bags, even polypropylene bags which are a thermoplastic polymer that can be used multiple times, unlike paper bags that are only used once and then discarded.

What are Reusable Bags?

Basically, reusable bags for shopping are intended to alleviate the burden on the environment, by replacing the use of disposable paper bags and even plastic bags that are single-use. Reusable bags, depending on the material of the bag, can be reused many times, and when not reusable any longer will biodegrade, unlike paper and most plastic bags used currently.

As was mentioned, some reusable shopping bags are made from plastics, but these are specially designed to biodegrade, so as not to pose a threat to the environment. Other materials commonly used to make reusable bags are made from natural fibres, such as Hessian sacks, calico bags, canvas bags, and jute bags. These types of reusable bags are hardy, long-lasting, and washable.

From a business point of view, stores that offer reusable bags such as these can have them printed with promotional advertising and/or the company’s logo on the side. Because reusable shopping bags are tough, made from natural fibres, paper bags are no match and rip easily from the corners of the food packaging they carry, and dissolve when they become wet. Reusable bags do not, these are not easy to cut or tear, and are washable and do not dissolve when wet.

When considering all of this, reusable bags are superior to paper bags and one-time-use plastic bags.
