Tips on the Care and Cleaning of Hessian Cloths
June 29, 2016
Hessian or burlap cloths are usable in the manufacturing of sacks along with other items. When users care for these items in the proper manner, the items are extremely durable and long lasting. Harsh cleaning methods can diminish the strength of these cloths and decrease their lifespan. For this reason, we offer tips on the care and cleaning of hessian cloths in the following directions.
Instructions for Washing and Drying
1. Pre-Treat Stains
With a soft cloth or sponge, pre-treat stains by blotting them with just cold water. Once you remove as much of the stains as possible this way, you can proceed with the other washing instructions.
2. Hand Wash Cloths in Cold Water and a Mild Detergent
Fill the sink with cold water and a mild detergent. Add the amount of detergent suggested on the manufacturer's label. Place the cloths into the mixture and allow them to soak for at least five minutes. Gently rub the cloths against each other to remove the rest of the stains and dirt.
3. Thoroughly Rinse Hessian Cloths
Drain the soapy water from the sink and ring out the cloths as much as possible. Fill the sink with cold water and allow the cloths to sit another five minutes. You can even add about two to four ounces of vinegar to the rinse water to ensure that all the soap releases from the cloths. This step also will ensure no unpleasant odors remain in the cloths if this is an issue. On top of this, you can rinse the cloths an additional time with a capful of fabric softener in the water. Wring the cloths out thoroughly to remove as much water as possible.
4. Dry Flat to Retain the Shape of the Cloths
Dry the cloths on a flat surface to retain their shape. If you hang the cloths, the weight of the water may stretch the cloths out of their original shapes.
How to Iron Hessian Cloths to Remove Wrinkles
While burlap cloths do not develop deep wrinkles if you wash and dry them according to the above instructions, occasionally you may have a reason to iron these cloths. To accomplish this task, turn the iron on to low heat and cover the hessian cloth with a damp cheesecloth. You should gently iron over the cheesecloth and burlap to remove the wrinkles.
The above tips on the care and cleaning of hessian cloths will ensure that the cloths last as long as possible for your various purposes.
